April Adventures in Pre-K!

Hi Everyone,

A friendly reminder that school will be closed on Monday, May 4th for Spring Conferences. Conferences will be held during the day and in the evening. Please remember that Child Watch will not be available at any time. In order to keep conferences focused and allow for open, meaningful conversation, it is not appropriate to discuss children in their presence. We kindly ask that you make alternative childcare arrangements.

It was so nice to see everyone after April vacation. The children did a great job of settling back into our school routine.

Our Reading Street Book this week was Over In The Meadow by Olive Wadsworth. "Over in the meadow in the sand and the sun lived an old mother turtle and her little turtles one. So begins this classic nursery poem, a favorite counting rhyme for generations of children." The children had fun counting along. And they enjoyed acting out the animals from the story. We talked a lot about rhyming words.

We also read Picture Perfect? by Fletcher Walker Elementary Students, Daisy and the Monster by Jane Simmons and The Berenstain Bears Go Out for the Team.

We listened to Picture Day Perfection by Deborah Diesen.

We reviewed letters W, M and N. We did a fun activity where the children were put into a group and assigned one of these letters. The W Team, M Team and N Team talked about the sound their letter made and came up with words that began with their letter. Once the discussions were done each group reported back as to what they came up with. We worked a lot on the formation of these 3 letters, practicing writing them and discussing how the letters are made of straight and diagnol lines, no curves. We reviewed the letter sound songs of Walk This Way In Wet Weather, Merry Mama Mouse and Gramma Mole and On A November Night, Night, Night.

Other activities included:

Sensory Table: Water beads, spoons, shovels. containers, strainers, funnel and sand wheel.

Play Doh: Green play doh, animals, trees, rocks

Art Easel: We started the week by creating Self Portraits. The children looked in the mirrors and drew their own picture. They did a really good job.

W for make a wish. We discussed the life cycle of dandelions and how they change from a yellow flower to become white and fluffy. The children used white paint to fingerpaint their own white dandelion.

Discovery Table: Microscopes and slides to view

Bug Discovery-magnifying glasses and bugs to view

Math Table: Light tables and transluscent legos to build with

Pretend Center: Doctor's Office

Project Table: We started the week creating blossoming trees out of sticks and tissue paper.

The children also worked on part of a gift for their Mom's.

On Friday, we used watercolors for free art.

Looking ahead, Show & Tell for letter X will be on Thursday. The children can bring in 1 item that either begins with X or ends with it.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kelley
