Hello Families,
We had a busy week in our classroom. We had two visits from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. We learned what the Audubon Society does and were able to meet and learn about two live animals. On Monday, we met a snake named Barboza. He is a desert rosy boa which is the smallest type of boa constrictor. We heard the story of The Flower Garden by Eve Bunting. On Thursday, we met a turtle named Westie. He is a painted turtle who is over 24 years old. We heard the story of Where Should Turtle Be? by Susan Ring. On Friday, we had our monthly visit with Mrs. T. And on top of all of that, we also had some beautiful weather to enjoy at recess!
Our Reading Street book was What Do You Do With A Tail Like This? by Steven Jenkins. "Steven Jenkins and illustrator Robin Page explore the many amazing things animals can do with eyes, ears, muth, noses, feet and tails. Young readers will relish the mystery behind this interactive guessing book." The children truly enjoyed guessing what the animal was and what they did with their body part without seeing the whole animal. We continue to work on the skill of compare and contrast...as we read about different things, we talk about how they are alike and how they are different.
Our vocabulary words were breathe, meal, animals, insects, hear and see.
Our Letter of the Week was N. Our Letter Sound Song was On a November, Night, Night, Night.
We also read Are You Listening Jack? by Molly Smith and The Best Nest by P.D. Eastman.
Other activities included:
Project Table: Materials to create a nest. These came out great and will be on display on our bulletin board soon!
We also made Owl-Noculars so the children could see what it felt like to be an owl (can't see on the side). The children had to look for mice (pom-poms) on the floor using their Owl-Noculars. The children were very excited to do this. I loved that a few children told me they couldn't wait to get home and explain about an owl's eyesight to their families.
Free Art on Friday.
Math Table: Link counting
Discovery: Real bird nests to check out....one even contained a piece of an eggshell. There also were unifix cubes and animal patterns. We have been talking about making patterns and extending them.
Puzzles and Games: There is a new floor puzzle....numbers to put together.
Art Easel: Spring worksheets and new watercolors to use.
Writing Table: N worksheets, N books, dot to dot from 1-20 and miscellaneous writing utensils to use.
Pretend Center: Our Doctor's Office continues to be a very busy place. With the doctors using instruments to check the babies, fill out forms, review x-rays and even bandage some of the patients up.
Sensory Table: The children have certainly enjoyed the sand in this table....they enjoyed the molds, vehicles and even started using the cups to turn this area into an ice cream shop this week.
Listening Center: The Easter Bunny Is Missing! by Steve Metzger.
Show & Tell for Letter W will be on Thursday.
See you in the morning!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kelley
