A Chilly Week in Pre-K!

Hi Everyone,

You may have heard, our Reading Street book this week was Miss Mary Mack by Mary Ann Hoberman and Nadine Bernard Westcott. This sing along book was a hit! The children learned the clapping game to go along with this rhyme.

Our Reading Street song was It's Amazing.

We read The Hat by Jan Brett this week. I introduced the concept of Compare/Contrast. What a great job the children did. We discussed what was the same versus what was different between the story of The Hat and The Mitten. This is what the children came up with...What was the same? The same author, hedgehog was in both stories, there was snow and something was lost. What was different? In one story the main character was a boy, it was a girl in the other, different items were lost. And talk about critical thinking-one child said I've been wondering if Nikki and Lisa are family.

We also read The Squirrels That Squabbled by Rachel Bright, Bright Snow White Snow by Alvin Tresselt and Snowmen At Night by Caralyn Buehner.

Our Letter of the Week was S. The children came up with a list of words that began with S. There were 59 words! The children were so proud when they came up with another word to add to our list. The extended day students set off on their weekly letter hunt to find letter S in the halls of our school. Our song was Let's Set Sail.

Math Table: Shape art and geoboards

Sensory Table : Arctic animals, paper shred, blocks, jewels, bubble wrap

Discovery Table: The children used tongs to fill the snowman up with the cotton balls

Play Doh: White sparkly play doh, cookie cutters, rollers, scissors and pieces to make a snowman

Listening Center: Alright Already, a Snowy Story

Art Easel: Free art-watercolors, white paper and markers were available

Project Table: Snowman Project-each child created a snowman. White paint was provided with lots of supplies available for them to use. Wait until you see these on our classroom bulletin board.

S is for shark-the children decorated a shark and we turned it into a hat. This in turn sparked ideas of different hats that could be made. And sure enough a wonderful snake hat was made!

On Friday, we made our own snow in the classroom.

A reminder that Jack and Jill will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 19th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Show & Tell on Thursday will be for Letter J.

Enjoy your day!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kelley
