Hello everyone, I hope that you are all doing well and have been enjoying your weekend so far. This week at school the class continued to work hard and was very busy with play and learning. This week we focused on the letter J at school, and next week we'll be learning about the letter K. For our new families, we hold a show and tell on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays, where every child is able to bring in one small item from home beginning with the letter of the week. The item should be small enough to fit in your child's backpack inorder to encourage their self help skills and independence within the classroom. This week we continued to discuss light and darkness, nocturnal animals, and different light sources. We also had a very special guest at school on Friday, Shea! We are very excited to be welcoming a new friend to the classroom in the coming weeks! Here is a look at what we did in centers this week:
The art table- Here the class used puffy paint and accessories to create melted snowmen. We also made a name- snowman craft that is now hanging in the classroom. The children did an amazing job working hard on tracing the letters of their names!
The art easel- The class used potato mashers and white paint to design unique snowman pictures. Later in the week the class used crayons and markers with blank paper for free drawing.
The math table- The children used an array of differently shaped snowman pieces to build snowmen according to the correct shape. This week we focused on circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles.
The discovery center- This center remained very busy throughout the week- the children used small squirt bottles to melt biodegradable packing peanut snowmen! The class loved experimenting with this cause and effect relationship.
Books we read as a class this week included:
Snowmen at Night
Sneezy the Snowman
Next week we will continue discussing light and darkness, and will be learning about various light sources and their effects on different objects. For this activity we will be using a shadow box and the children can bring in a flashlight from home to use for this activity throughout the week. I will be providing flashlights for the classroom use but if your child would like to bring one from home they are welcome to do so.
This past Wednesday we had our monthly fire drill and the class did a wonderful job following school rules and expectations while doing so. We are very proud of them and all of the hard work they have been putting into their learning this year!
We hope that you enjoy the rest of your long weekend, and look forward to seeing everyone again next week!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mackenzie and Mrs. Haynes
