Another Great Week in Pre-K!

Hello All,

We began our Reading Street Curriculum  this week. Our first unit is Building Our Homes. Our Reading Street book was The House in the Meadow by Shutta Crum. "Over in the meadow there's a spring wedding, with the couple's 10 best friends to celebrate. What's next? A house! 9 diggers, 8 masons, 7 carpenters, 6 well diggers, 5 roofers, 4 plumbers, 3 electricians, 2 painters and 1 inspector show up with all their trucks and tools to build a new house. And when the couple and their friends have a house-warming party, a new baby comes, too!"

Our vocabulary words from our story were build, carpenter, paint, climbed, pipes and roof. There is a song that goes along with our book each week. This week our song was Build A House....the children really liked this song. We sing and come up with movements to go along with the song each week.

We also learned the song Time to Rhyme which is a great introduction to the interactive charts of this curriculum. We talked a lot about words that rhyme. Try asking your child about this song-they know it well!

The other books we read this week were Edward Gets Messy by Rita Meade, Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas and we listened to Llama Llama and the Bully Goat by Anna Dewdney.

Our Centers this week:

Sensory Table: Kinetic sand with construction vehicles and wood blocks

Play Doh:  Blue play doh, cookie cutters, rollers, scissors and number cards

Writing Table: I Can Draw book, doodle boards, white paper and markers

Discovery Table: Small magnetic rods and balls

Math Table Identifying numbers, adding links to cards

Art Easel: Free art-white paper and palettes of water colors

Project Table: Materials to make a house-craft sticks, colored popsicle sticks, cotton balls, tooth picks, tape and watercolor markers were used. Each one was different and wonderful.

At Puzzles and Games, I added the board game Hi Ho Cherry-O. The children have been having a great time playing this. Learning the rules of the game, taking turns and being a good sport.

I introduced jobs this week in our classroom. Each child will have a job each day. Our jobs are line leader, caboose, card helper, calendar helper, block helpers, super duper helper and sweepers.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kelley
