Hello!
We had a great week at school. The children were very busy in the classroom. Our Community Helper on Tuesday was Officer Ware from the Attleboro Police Department. She spoke to the children about her job as a Police Officer. She brought the children outside where her police cruiser was parked on our playground. We saw the blue lights, heard sirens, got to sit in the back and even learned what is kept in the trunk of the police car.
Our Reading Street book was Wynken, Blynken & Nod by Eugene Field. "Wynken, Blynken & Nod takes children on a magical journey into the night sky where three fishermen sail in a wooden shoe, capturing stars in nets of silver and gold and laughing with the moon. And when the nighttime adventure comes to an end, the wooden shoe brings the fishermen home to the real world of a child fast asleep." Our Reading Street song was Come And Pretend With Me. Our vocabulary words were dew, fishermen, river, fish, nets and wave.
We also read Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie by Jill Esbaum, Five Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino and The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano.
Our Letter of the Week was I. Our song was Wriggly, Wiggly Izzy Fish.
Other activities included:
Listening Center: Click, Clack Boo! by Doreen Cronin.
Math Table: Roll & cover...the children rolled a dice and covered the corresponding number. Counting, number recognition and using those fingers to peel stickers...all while having fun!
Play Doh: This week I added pipe cleaners and googly eyes to this table.
Discovery Table: Pumpkin exploration. There was a pumpkin cut in half for the children to check out. They were able to reach right in to feel the pulp and seeds. We talked about the different parts of the pumpkin. They were able to get a closer look using magnifying glasses.
Writing Table: All different writing utensils, papers and even stamps this week.
Pretend Center: Our Construction Site had a new job added to it. The children were able to use a hammer to hit wooden golf tees into a pumpkin. There were also elastics available to stretch across the tees.
Art Easel: On Monday, we had scarecrow dot art. The rest of the week we had color mixing! This was very popular. The children could mix yellow and red on their paper to create an orange pumpkin. When they were done, they could add pieces to make its face. Some children were even cutting their own pieces to make the face.
Project Table: Pumpkin Life Cycle...coloring and sequencing the pumpkin life cycle. Many children were telling me they couldn't wait to tell their families about the life cycle of a pumpkin.
Wooden pumpkins to color and add face pieces to.
Spookley Project...all different shape pumpkins were made
Also, each child was able to pick a real pumpkin and decorate it. Everyone worked really hard at coloring/drawing with paint sticks, cutting, peeling, tying, twisting and gluing items to decorate their pumpkin.
Extended Day Students-We have been using chalkboards to practice writing our letters. We have been reviewing all of the letters we have learned so far this year.
We also made Halloween bracelets and marble spiders that moved. Today, we made webs out of string and a branch from a tree. The children had to wrap the string all around the parts of their branch to make a spider web. Once they were done, they added spiders to their web.
Looking ahead, Show & Tell for letter U will be on Thursday.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kelley
