February Friends and Fun in Enrichment

Good afternoon families! This week was filled with fun and learning in the Enrichment classroom. Monday will be our Valentine’s Day Celebration at school. This week at MORNING MEETING we read Pete the Cat Valentine’s Day is Cool by Kimberly and James Dean. Pete and his friend Callie try their best to make sure all of their friends and the helpers in their community feel special on Valentine’s Day. But what happens when Pete forgets to make a card for Callie?! Ask your child what happens at the end of the story.

We also practiced building Mat Man! Mat Man is an activity that is part of the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum that we use at school. This curriculum teaches that all letters and numbers can be made up of lines and curves. Through the Mat Man-building song, the children learn about big lines, little lines, big curves and little curves. The students really enjoyed this activity. It’s also a great way for children to learn how to draw people.

Here's what's NEW at CENTERS:

Art Table: This week, the children decorated mailbags for Valentine’s Day, practiced drawing people, and played with shaving cream.

Easel: Painting hearts with paintbrushes and stampers.

Math Table: Weigh Station- the kiddos used a scale and several different items found around the classroom (crayons, blocks, counters, etc). They explored concepts of more/less and heavy/light. They also went on a counting hunt. There were cards hung up around the room with different quantities of items on them. The children used clipboards and crossed off matching numbers on their paper as they searched around the room.

Discovery Table: This center focused on feelings again. This week, the children explored ANGRY and SCARED emotions. The center has feelings dolls, puzzles and sorting pictures. There are also little hand mirrors with felt on the back. The students used Velcro eyes, noses, mouths and eyebrows to depict different feelings.

Writing Table: community helper coloring pages

Pretend Center: This center has transformed into a workshop. The children used tools such as hammers, wrenches, saws and screwdrivers at the workbench. There are also cardboard bricks for them to use in their construction.

Enjoy the rest of your week. We look forward to seeing your little ones on Monday!

Your Teachers,

Brenda Daday & Christina Renoni
