Hello everyone,
It's hard to believe we are already through the month of September. October is Community Helper Month at Jack and Jill. On Friday, we had our first community helper visit. Nurse Cerrone came to visit. She talked of the importance of proper handwashing to get rid of germs. She taught the children a fun song to sing when they are washing their hands. She read the book Helping You Heal, A Book About Nurses. She brought gloves, stethoscopes, Band-Aids, surgical caps and shoe covers that the children were able to check out!
This week's Reading Street book was We Need Construction Workers by Lisa Trumbauer. "Simple text and photographs present construction workers (both male and female) and their role in the community." We discussed the difference in this book's illustrations, in that a camera was used to capture photographs vs last week's book in which the illustrations were drawn. Our song to go along with our book was We Are Builders. Our Amazing Words were buildings, hammers, lumber, pound, wear (hard hats, tool belts and work boots) and community. We talked about the construction that was going on right at school this week. The crane that was in our parking lot was being used by construction workers to repair the roof on our building. I told the children to keep their eyes open for construction going on in our community. There is so much of it happening in Attleboro!
We also read, That's What Friends Are For by Julia Hubery, Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett and Little Acorn which is a nature story of the life cycle of acorns and oak trees. We had been busy observing the start of changes to the maple tree near our playground. Some of the leaves have begun changing color and many helicopter seeds are dropping onto the playground. The children were so amazed at what happened when they tossed these seeds into the air.
Our Letter of the Week was F. Our song this week was Five Fat Cats.
Our Centers this week:
Listening Center: Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site
Writing Table: F worksheets, white paper, colored pencil and feathers and glue
Discovery Table: Fall Discovery Items-2 bird nests, 1 with an egg shell, a bees' nest, pine cones, acorns, different tree bark and magnifying glasses. It made me happy when I was explaining where I found the items and a child told me when he got home he was going to look around his yard.
Art Easel: Apple painting with Q-Tips.
Project Table: Materials to decorate a fish
Construction hats to decorate
Materials to make a farm...craft sticks, hay and farm stickers
Math Table: Geoboards...elastics were stretched onto the pegs to make many things including a houses, buildings, shapes and numbers
Blocks: The Legos out at blocks have been a hit! The children were working together to build.
Pretend Center: It was the last week of babies and kitchen. This was a busy center each day with the children often setting up chairs to make a car and heading out on trips to Disney and New Hampshire.
Looking ahead, our Letter of the Week next week will be E. Show & Tell will be on Thursday.
Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kelley
